METHODS FOR REMOVING GUM FROM CONCRETE

The best methods of removing chewing gum from concrete usually depends on how long the gum has been stuck there and level of penetration into the concrete surface. If the gum was left not long ago and it has not penetrated the surface, we are sometimes able to remove it by covering it with ice until the gum freezes, then scraping it off with a metal putty knife.

The ice forces the gum to freeze into a more forgiving substance compared to a gooey and stringy mess. Once the chewing gum is frozen, we slide a putty knife or scraper under the gum. Then we slide the scraper very slowly under the gum and the whole piece should peel right off the concrete.

The above method is only possible with gum that is brand new.

When we remove gum that has turned black, or is already smashed down into the concrete, we use a hot water pressure washer with the heat dialed up to 200 Degrees to melt the gum. For this type of gum removal, we do not use very high pressure because that will sometimes ruin the surface of the concrete!

Our team never uses any more pressure than needed to safely clean concrete surfaces. These types of surfaces can be destroyed a lot easier than people think, especially if they’re only a couple of years old. Concrete can need up to 100 years to cure completely. That is why we always use hot water and the least amount of pressure possible for our professional gum removal professional.
